Tides of Annihilation Brings King Arthur to Cologne
Chengdu's Eclipse Glow Games turned Arthurian legend into a buy-to-play action game, won the gamescom award for Most Epic, and made its ONL case.

The Arthurian legend has been told by a thousand Western studios. At Gamescom 2026, the loudest new take on it came from Chengdu. Tides of Annihilation, developed and published by Eclipse Glow Games, showed a new trailer at Opening Night Live on August 25 and left the awards ceremony on August 28 holding the gamescom award for Most Epic. It had entered the show with two nominations announced on August 24; the other, Best Sony PlayStation Game, went to Onimusha: Way of the Sword.
A Chinese studio aiming straight at the West
Eclipse Glow Games is a Tencent-backed studio of roughly 100 experienced developers, and the game is a deliberate statement: a single-player, buy-to-play action game built on Unreal Engine 5, with no service-model scaffolding anywhere in the pitch. The setting choice was strategic from the start. Reporting around the game's February 2025 reveal said the team picked Arthurian legend specifically to speak to Western audiences, the mirror image of how Black Myth: Wukong aimed its mythology at home. In the story, an otherworldly invasion shatters London, and Gwendolyn, the lone survivor, discovers she can command the Knights of the Round Table across four weapon styles. The new trailer, titled "Veil of Old Days," brings Guinevere into the frame and calls Lancelot to the fight.
A Most Epic win, one demo booth
The Most Epic trophy, handed over at the August 28 ceremony, is the kind of validation money cannot buy on paper: the category pits the show's spectacle giants against each other, and a studio of about 100 took it. The second nomination, Best Sony PlayStation Game, went to Onimusha: Way of the Sword, which also took Best Gameplay that night. On the show floor, the game ran its first overseas hands-on from August 26 to 30 at booth B-050 in Hall 6, offering roughly an hour of a standalone level plus two boss challenges. Steam lists the release as coming soon for PC, with Xbox and PlayStation versions confirmed in Tencent's SPARK 2026 lineup.
Why this matters beyond one game
Tides of Annihilation is part of the wider signal from Cologne: fourteen Chinese-developed or published titles took the Opening Night Live stage, a record, and the premium single-player model keeps showing up at the sharp end of it. A studio of about 100 people, competing in a genre usually owned by teams ten times its size, choosing ownership-friendly release terms over live-service math, is the kind of bet worth watching, and the Most Epic trophy says the judges agree.
