Showa American Story Gets Its First Playable
Showa American Story, the RPG where Japan bought America, goes playable at gamescom after five years. A new trailer lands at Opening Night Live.

Five years after its first trailer made the internet do a double take, Showa American Story is finally going into players' hands. Wuhan indie studio NEKCOM confirmed this week that the game gets its first public playable demo at gamescom 2026, running August 26 to 30, with a brand new trailer premiering at Opening Night Live before the show floor opens. It is on Steam with wishlists open, and the studio still says it ships this year.
If you never caught the pitch, here it is in full. In the fictional Showa 66, our 1991, Japan's economy ran so hot that it bought up most of America, and Japanese culture soaked into everything. The Statue of Liberty wears a kimono. Mount Rushmore blooms with cherry blossoms. Then a catastrophe ends the world as everyone knows it, and what is left is a B-movie road trip through zombies, yakuza, and roadside weirdness.

The whole game in one mural: Liberty in a kimono, New York written in Japanese.
You play Choko, a 19-year-old stunt double for action movies who is killed at an airport, buried in the wilds, and climbs out of the ground an unknown amount of time later. The world she walks back into is unrecognizable, and her answer is to find a motorcycle and an RV, then drive until she finds her sister. NEKCOM pegs the main story at more than 20 hours before you count the side quests, and the game carries full voice acting in Chinese, English, and Japanese.

The road trip: Choko rides out across the wasteland, giant monuments and all.
Four ways to play it at gamescom
The trailer premieres at Opening Night Live, which airs 2 a.m. August 26 Beijing time (the evening of August 25 in Europe and the US). The hands-on booth sits in Hall 6 at stand A-30 for all five show days, and NEKCOM is offering four different slices of the game: a linear stretch of Chapter 3 for story and core combat, daily life inside the RV with its customization systems, a free-roam walk through the New Yokohama shopping district at the foot of the hills, and a Chapter 4 boss fight for anyone who wants the hard stuff first. Attendees who play walk away with gamescom 2026 merch, and hands-on impressions from media and creators are set to lift in late August.

New Yokohama wears its Hollywood hills cosplay openly.
Five years of staying alive
For a studio the size of NEKCOM, getting here is the story as much as the game. Founded in Wuhan in 2011, the team first revealed Showa American Story in 2021 and won a huge following on concept art and tone alone, the kind of attention most small studios never see. An original 2025 window slipped late that year, with the studio saying it would rather not leave anything unfinished, and since then: mostly silence. Five years after the reveal, this week is the first time anyone outside the studio gets to judge the combat feel, the world, and the pace for themselves. For a game that has lived on vibes this long, that is a big deal.
