Lazy Bear Games has put a date on the sequel. Graveyard Keeper 2 launches on September 22, 2026, and pre-orders opened on August 26. The developer, working with publisher tinyBuild, used Gamescom week to end months of waiting, and the pitch is the same black hearted one as ever: the dead are a resource, and business is about to scale.

From gravedigger to Grand Inquisitor

The sequel promotes you. Instead of managing one graveyard, you play a Grand Inquisitor trying to rebuild a kingdom mid zombie apocalypse. The loop keeps everything the 2018 original built its name on, cemetery expansion, town rebuilding, and production chains run by the undead, then layers new systems over the top. Zombies staff underground workstations so crafting lines run themselves, tower defense battles send your barely competent soldiers against sieges, and district by district you reclaim the town while turning every resident's misfortune into revenue.

The game ships on PC through Steam, Epic Games Store, and GOG, plus PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and Nintendo Switch and Switch 2, in 11 languages including English. Pre-order bonuses are a sauna building and an outfit fit for the new Grand Inquisitor.

A very patient audience

The original Graveyard Keeper launched on August 15, 2018 and settled in as a cult sim with more than 50,000 Steam reviews that hold a Very Positive rating. The sequel's reveal at the Triple-i Initiative showcase in April 2026 showed how patient that audience has been: wishlists passed 120,000 within hours of the announcement and crossed 400,000 inside a week, landing the game in Steam's top 100 most wishlisted titles.

That number matters because it is entirely indie. No franchise machinery behind it, only a small studio's dark comedy about corpse economics doing the work.

The honest catch

The first game is beloved and exhausting in the same breath. Its tech tree sprawls, its crafting chains eat hours, and "grind" was the word in half its negative reviews. The sequel promises modernized systems and automation that goes deeper than before, which reads as Lazy Bear acknowledging the complaint. Whether the grind is designed out or merely automated is the question September 22 answers.

If you have been waiting since 2018, the wait ends on September 22, 2026. If you bounced off the original, the honest advice is to watch for reviews that speak to the pacing before you buy.
