Zelda 40th Direct Dates Ocarina Remake and Movie
Nintendo's Zelda 40th Anniversary Direct revealed an Ocarina of Time remake for Switch 2, a live-action film dated April 2027, and a world concert tour.
Nintendo held a dedicated Zelda 40th Anniversary Direct on September 9, 2026, revealing the full scope of the franchise's milestone celebration. The headline announcements: a complete remake of The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time launching November 5, 2026, exclusively for Nintendo Switch 2, and a live-action Zelda film dated April 30, 2027.
The Direct also unveiled a 40th anniversary Switch 2 console, a world concert tour, new amiibo, a LEGO set, and a real playable ocarina peripheral.
Ocarina of Time, rebuilt for Switch 2
Producer Eiji Aonuma presented the first extended gameplay demonstration of the Ocarina of Time remake. The game is not a simple HD remaster. It introduces new movement options including a jump button, free camera control via the right stick, fully voiced characters, and new progression tools designed around Switch 2's capabilities. The remake also features a new "Zelda Notes" integration with the Nintendo Switch App, allowing players to record achievements and share music compositions.
The digital edition is priced at $59.99, with a physical edition at $69.99. The game launches November 5, 2026.
A 40th anniversary Switch 2 console
Nintendo announced a limited-edition Zelda 40th Anniversary Switch 2, featuring a green-and-gold color scheme with the Triforce emblem on the dock. The console launches October 29, 2026, priced at 62,980 yen in Japan (approximately $420 USD at current exchange rates). A matching Pro Controller and carrying case with screen protector will also be available the same day.
The live-action film
The Zelda movie, produced by Nintendo and Sony Pictures, is scheduled for global release on April 30, 2027. Director Wes Ball (The Maze Runner trilogy) is attached. Nintendo CEO Shigeru Miyamoto stated the film is an original story inspired by the franchise's 40 years of games, not a direct adaptation of any single title. No trailer was shown during the Direct, only the official logo.
Cast announcements include Beau Braggason as Zelda and Benjamin Evan Ainsworth as Link.
Concert tour, LEGO, and amiibo
A 40th anniversary orchestral concert tour will begin in January 2027, with stops in Japan, the United States, the United Kingdom, and Australia. The setlist will cover music from across the franchise, including themes for Link, Zelda, and Ganondorf.
LEGO announced a Zelda-themed set: a 1,750-piece Ocarina of Time diorama featuring Link and Epona, aimed at adult collectors and priced at approximately $250 USD. It launches in spring 2027.
New Zelda amiibo will also be released, though specific designs were not detailed during the Direct.
What this means for indie developers
For the indie community, the Switch 2 hardware launch and the Zelda remake represent a significant install-base event. A November 5 launch window for one of the most acclaimed games in history will drive Switch 2 adoption, which in turn expands the addressable market for indie developers on the platform.
