Gamescom Gave Indie Games Its Own Primetime

Last night, gamescom did something it has never done at this scale: it gave indie games their own primetime broadcast. The awesome indies show, produced together with IGN, ran for over an hour of trailers, release date reveals, hands-on previews, and developer interviews, entirely dedicated to small teams. It is the loudest signal yet from the world's biggest games show that its growth story is an indie story.

A broadcast built for small teams

The show is not a bonus feature bolted onto the schedule. Show director Stefan Heikhaus says the selection bar was simple: a game had to communicate what makes it unique in an instant, because the pitch itself has to do the same job the showcase does. This year also added hands-on previews to the format, a natural fit once IGN came on board as co-producer. Gamescom director Tim Endres frames the show as the digital twin of the indie area on the exhibition floor, which this year hosted more than 420 companies, up 16 percent from last year and the largest in the show's history. With E3 gone, gamescom is effectively the only major show left that combines a public show floor, trade business, a developer conference, and global broadcast stages, and it is choosing to spend one of those stages on indies.

The awards noticed too

The gamescom award nominations announced earlier this week point the same direction. A tram action game set in a Japanese style dystopia, from Spanish indie studio Undercoders, collected four nominations. Cairn, the survival climbing game from French studio The Game Bakers, earned nods for Best Gameplay and Best Audio. Escape from Duckov, the duck themed extraction roguelite from Team Soda and published by bilibili, became the first Chinese indie ever nominated for a gamescom award. And OPUS: Prism Peak, made by SIGONO with Shueisha Games, landed three nominations including Most Wholesome. The smallest story might be the best: Memoria Wake began as a hobby project by college friends who taught themselves Unity along the way, and now sits on the Indie Arena Booth.

Why primetime matters

The organizers have numbers to back the bet. Around 17 million players in Germany play indie games, and 82 percent of players say they find it impressive when small teams pull off games like these with modern tools. Attention is the one resource indie studios cannot buy, and an hour of it on the show's official channel, in front of the audience that just watched Opening Night Live, is worth more than any wishlist drive. After a year of closures and cancellations elsewhere, the part of this industry we cover just got its own spotlight. We will be watching what comes out of it.
